Guide for People and Nature Speakers
What can I present on? |
Presentation topics range from human emotion, climate adaptation, wildlife conflict, and offshore wind to political influence and communication strategies. The breadth and depth of topics reflect the innovative research being done at Oregon State University at the intersection of human and non-human nature.
Presentations can also be on a particular topic of interest such as, team science, facilitation, how to write a CV, how to network effectively, social science methods/theories, etc. |
Who can present? |
We prioritize Oregon State University students (undergraduates or graduates) to present their research at any stage in the research process. Speakers may choose to present a draft research proposal, conference talk, or a finalized dissertation defense. It is a great opportunity to practice public speaking, work out any logistical kinks, workshop ideas, gather feedback from an array of scholars, field some questions and comments, and raise awareness about your work and/or research process!
We also welcome guest speakers both within OSU such as faculty and post-docs, and beyond OSU to share their expertise on a particular topic that attendees have expressed interest in! |
What's the preferred format? |
Speakers typically present for 20-30 minutes with a Q&A afterwards.
Please check out our Objectives and Intentions to read more about the audience of People and Nature. A popular intention with our space is "interactivity" which helps build community and foster collaboration. This looks like talking with the audience rather than at them. Consider adding interactive elements to your presentation and/or communicating specific feedback needs in the beginning of your presentation. If you want to give a more discussion-based presentation, have an activity to try out, or want practice facilitating a meeting on a particular topic of interest related to people and nature (a mini ted-talk, if you will), you can sign up for that too! For students and attendees of PAN, we advocate making the presentation work for you and recommend that you come prepared knowing how to get the most from the expertise in the room. |
How do I sign-up? |
Please sign-up to fill out a form or email one of our co-hosts.
We recommend that interested speakers be in contact with the hosts at least 2 weeks in advance to help develop ideas and discuss the format. We are always planning ahead, so if you have a deadline coming up, schedule a workshop with PAN. You can sign up for Fall, Winter, or Spring term. |
